Mapping Stockwell 2004

The intention of this project is to introduce and explore the notion of mapping through the mediums of drawing, photography, and video.

We have shown the students a great range of artists work and different kinds of film to encourage them to broaden their frame of reference. We also show them the great possibilites within map making as a form of personal expression, which can be fun and quite challenging... from images of the world to local and historical maps. The students were asked to make their own map drawiing based on their home and route to school or another familiar journey. These could be imaginative drawings which explore fantasy and imaginary places.

The next stage involved taking photograghs of the journey with disposable cameras. The journey included references to the school. Finally we produced a group installation piece that included elements of drawing, photographs, and video to encapsulate a journey.

Students were encouraged to discuss the decisions they made at all stages throughout the project. The aim is to get the students to gain confidence in their ability to develop and project an idea... to encourage them to relate their own identity to their environment and community.
